Who was Anne Frank?
Anne Frank: A Remarkable Girl in a Bizarre Time
If you’ve ever walked through Amsterdam, you might have passed by the Anne Frank House – a small, dark building on the Prinsengracht, where a remarkable and tragic story is hidden. Anne Frank was a Jewish girl who went into hiding with her family during World War II to escape the Nazis. She lived for more than two years in the Achterhuis, a secret annex behind her father Otto Frank’s office. During that time, she kept a diary in which she wrote about her daily life, her dreams, fears, and hopes. That diary was later published and became famous worldwide.
Anne at School: A Smart and Curious Student
Before going into hiding, Anne had a very normal life as a schoolgirl in Amsterdam. She attended the Montessori school on Niersstraat, where she was known as a smart, energetic, and sometimes a bit cheeky student. She loved writing stories, kept diaries (even before going into hiding), and dreamed of becoming a writer or journalist. When Jewish children were no longer allowed to attend regular schools, Anne was transferred to the Jewish Lyceum. She continued to perform well there, despite the tensions of the time. In her diary, she frequently writes about her schoolwork, classmates, and the books she read. Even in the Achterhuis, she kept studying and hoped for a future after the war.
The Tragic End
Unfortunately, Anne was eventually betrayed and arrested along with her family. She died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp just before the end of the war. Only her father survived. Her diary has become a powerful symbol of hope and humanity, even in the darkest of times.
Amsterdam as a Refuge for Jewish People
But Anne Frank is not the only Jewish story that Amsterdam holds. The city has a rich Jewish history dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Jews from all over Europe settled here in search of safety and freedom. Amsterdam was a place where they could live, work, and preserve their culture relatively peacefully.
Jewish Neighborhoods and Culture
Jewish neighborhoods like the Plantage area and Jodenbreestraat were established in the city. The Portuguese Synagogue is a beautiful example of the influence the Jewish community had on the city. Unfortunately, this came to a sudden end during the war. More than 75% of Amsterdam’s Jewish residents were deported and murdered.
Memories Throughout the City
Today, you can still feel the Jewish history in various places in the city. Think of the stumbling stones on the sidewalk, the Holocaust Names Monument, and of course, the Anne Frank House.
In this tour, we will take you to some of these locations and tell you the stories that happened there.
