Cycling to Amsterdam’s best playgrounds with kids

One of the joys of raising a family in Amsterdam is how easily you can explore the city by bike. From quiet green corners to wild nature playgrounds, there’s something for every age group, and they’re all reachable without needing a car. Here’s a list of some of the city’s best playground destinations for cycling families.

Natural adventures on the edge of the city

Some of the best playgrounds are a little further out, making them perfect goals for a family ride by bike.

Het woeste westen, Westerpark (west)
A rugged nature playground where kids can splash, balance, build and explore. Bring a towel and dry clothes—it’s muddy in the best way. Near the Westergasterras for a coffee break.

Natuurcentrum Amsterdamse bos & Goat farm (south)
This forest education center has free exhibitions, farm animals and a natural playground nearby. Combine it with a visit to the Ridammerhoeve goat farm for lunch and ice cream.

De Natureluur, Nieuw-west (west)
Located near Sloterplas, this playground is all about climbing, hiding and experimenting. Great for older kids too.

Jeugdland playground, Oost (east)
Just behind Flevopark, this creative play space has a zip line, water play, hut-building area and even a barefoot path in summer. There’s a small café and a big grassy area for picnics.

Parks with play spaces in every corner

These parks offer plenty of space for a full day out, combining greenery with playgrounds and other bike and family-friendly stops.

Noorderpark, Noord (north)
Easy to reach via the ferry from Central Station. The southern playground is colorful and active, while the northern side offers more natural play near the pink café “the Tanker – an old gas station.” Lot’s of hidden and quiet spots for a picknick, too.

Vondelpark, Oud-zuid (central)
One of the most bike-friendly parks in the city. The Groot Melkhuis has a large fenced playground with a café terrace next to it. Further south is the Vondeltuin, with skate rental and open space for ball games or lounging.

Amstelpark, Buitenveldert (south)
An under-the-radar gem, this park includes a massive playground, mini train, electric cars, and a petting zoo. It was originally built for the Floriade in the 1970s and still feels magical.

Nieuwe meer beach play area (south)
There’s a sandy beach at Nieuwe Meer (near Amsterdamse Bos) with shallow water, great for warm days. It’s a bit of a ride, but worth it with older kids.

Flevopark (east)
Calm and classic, ideal for families looking for a straightforward playground visit combined with green surroundings. There are coffee spots in the park.

Inner-city gems for shorter outings

Ideal for toddlers or quick after-school fun, these are scattered across central neighborhoods.

Speelboot, Westerdok
A quirky floating playground in the harbor. Compact but unique.

Uj klaren, Weteringcircuit (center)
Perfect for preschoolers, especially those learning to ride. There’s a mini traffic layout, small climbing equipment and a football area.

Oosterspeeltuin, Funenpark (east)
Near Czaar Peterstraat, this playground features wooden structures, a sandbox with water pump, and lots of space to run.

Zuiderspeeltuin, Barentszplein (central west)
A shaded neighborhood playground near the IJ, close to bike routes to Westerpark and the ferry to Noord.

Speelplek Museumplein (Museum Square)
There’s a small but popular playground behind the Rijksmuseum near the pond—ideal if you’re combining a cultural stop with kid-friendly play.

If you’re ready for a longer ride, these destinations make great half-day trips from the city center!

‘t Twiske, Oostzaan
A forested recreation area north of Amsterdam, with multiple playgrounds (some with snack shack), beaches, and even a treetop climbing park and multiple child friendly café’s. Easily reachable via ferry (e.g. from the center or west) and cycle paths. Huge play area!

Elsenhove, Amstelveen
A child-friendly petting farm with play equipment and a café. A great spot for younger kids.

Spaarnwoude recreation area
Out west of the city, this rural area features a pancake house, adventure play equipment and a hidden forest play zone with musical elements.

Oude stad boerderij Diemen
A community-run children’s farm near Diemen with animals, gardens and a play meadow. Interesting for families in the Eastern neighborhoods.
