Willet-Holthuysen House

On the Herengracht stands the home of Abraham Willet and Louisa Holthuysen, a wealthy couple who furnished their house in the 19th century as a small private museum. When Louisa died in 1895, she left the house and its complete contents to the city of Amsterdam – on the condition that it be preserved as a museum.

As a result you don’t walk past display cases here, but through a real canal house: the ballroom, the dining room with its table laid for dinner, the kitchen in the basement and the surprisingly large French garden behind the house. It is one of the few places where you can see how life was actually lived behind those famous façades.

Route

The bike tour starts at our desk on the Nieuwezijds Kolk, right in the heart of what we locals affectionately call ‘Mokum’. We begin with a short explanation of your bike and the most important traffic rules, so everyone can ride safely and comfortably.

We take it easy and ride past some beautiful 17th-century canal houses towards Nieuwmarkt, a lively square on the edge of the old city centre. From there we cycle to the Amstel, where we stop at the world-famous Magere Brug for the finest view across the water.

We then ride along the canals to Museumplein. In the city’s museum quarter your guide points out the major museums and gives you tips on which collections are worth your time. After that we return to our starting point along the canal belt.

Start and end point of the bike tour
